March 6 is Ash Wednesday – which is the beginning of our 2019 Lenten Journey. This is a journey we are invited to take each year in the forty days leading up to Easter. This is a spiritual journey to be experienced both personally and, at the same time, to be experienced together as a faith community.
Lent is a season for transformation – a time to turn inward and consider the health of our own souls and the health of the body of Christ in which we have been called to participate. It is a time for the rediscovery of our spirituality, examining where we are faithfully following Jesus, as well as where we miss the mark. It’s an opportunity to see how we are a part of Jesus’ beloved community, and where we are in Christ’s vision of God’s coming reign.
Our Lenten theme this year, chosen by the Music and Worship team, is “New World Coming.” This was taken from the Church of the Brethren 2019 Lenten devotional book. The Music and Worship team has purchased one copy of this devotional for each family in our church. These can be picked up at church at the welcome center. Along with the Music and Worship team, I want to encourage each of you to take time to read this devotional book each day as a part of your own devotion time during lent.
I will also be offering a six-week study titled: Another Way to See the Cross, by Richard Rohr. This study will take place on Tuesday evenings from 6:30-7:30 p.m. starting Tuesday, March 12 and ending on Tuesday, April 16.
It is my hope and prayer for our faith community that we will all commit to take time this Lenten season to journey together through our devotions, Bible study and worship. As we are faithful to this journey, may we catch the vision of Jesus’s teachings of a new world coming and how we might bring glimpses of this new world to our community.
